Pandanus trees in the background have been planted by various indigenous people. They are prized for their rich oily nuts.

The Sculpture is made of marine plywood and painted with oil base paint.

The plants in the foreground are New Guinea Impatience.

Elegant Doggy Do Remover

This Doggy Do Remover as a levered brass pushing device and a yoked directional flashlight for aiding in dog waste removal.

It was commissioned by the art faculty at Northern Illinois University for a retiring colleague.

Wind Car

Fetish Kart

My Fetish Kart (from the side)

This Kart has heavy duty bicycle wheels. It has a variety of items that some men may fantasize about. It includes two dolls that I made which are dressed in school uniforms.
The back view of the cart shows drawers and dolls in the openings.
Directly behind the stuffed dolls are temple (tempo) blocks that are activated by rolling the cart.

Spider & Woman

Here we have a spider that has lost it's ability to spin web but has learned the art of welding. (preposterous) The spider used its welding skills to entrap a woman.
Again an example of Don's wry sense of the absurd.

Each participant in WWII had their own unique handgun. The Germans had, I think, the most interesting designs found in the Luger P08, the Walther P38 and the Mauser 7.63. England's handgun was the Webley auto, US the famous 1911 45, the Japanese NAMBU 8mm pistol and the world famous contribution the U21. America lobbed a lot of Howitzer shells, the tree base here, and of course much blood was spilled.
Humans seem to love killing each other.

This sculpture acknowledges that without eulogizing the fact.

Kandep Sun Clock

This sculpture is a variety of sun-timepiece. It was placed on the government station in the Kandep valley of Papua New Guinea.

Mobile at Tinjipaka

Tinjipaka, a remote station in the Kandep Valley, felt like the End of The World. It is far removed from any obvious civilization. Don erected this mobile on a small mountain overlooking the roadway. His students were very proud to assist in assembling it. The student art class made their own small mobiles, as a study of balance.

Bull & Pyrethrum

This large "burumakau" (bull) was created of marine plywood for the Mt. Hagen Agricultural Show. The "plaua" (flower) is a separate small addition to the bull. Both cattle and pyrethrum are important additions to the highland economy.

The Enga Warrior

The Enga Warrior in place at the Mt. Hagen Agricultural Show.

The Enga Warrior was created at Pausa Lutheran High School and transported to Mt. Hagen for display at the Agricultural Show at Mt.Hagen.

The warrior prior to painting it is standing by the children's swing set.

This is the maquette was made for the approval of the committee for the government Agricultural Show.

Hagen Agricultural Show

Both the Enga Warrior and The Bull and Flowers were sculptures commissioned by friends of Ross Allen for the large agricultural show at Mount Hagen in the Central Highlands of New Guinea.

Here the sculpture is begun, by the swing set Don made for the kids.

Kandep Kakaruku (Chicken)

The giant bird was attached to a peak at 500 feet above the air field which is at 8600 feet above sea level near the Kandep Patrol Station. Getting the Kakaruku sculpture to the mountain peak required a lot of help.

Many people, directed by Ross Allen, the Australian patrol officer, worked to carry the sculpture into position.

This giant bird was placed to give bush pilots a reference to the airstrip below, which was often clouded over.

The pilots could look at the way the bird was facing, then could go 100’ beyond the bird to find the otherwise invisible airstrip, which was 500’ below.

My young children were entranced by the sculpture which was surrounded by New Guinea Impatience.

The line of trees in the background are Pandanus Trees, highly valued by our New Guinea friends.

The first three sculptures were commissioned by the Patrol Officer, Ross Allen of the Kandep Valley, Central Highlands of New Guinea. It is an unlikely sight in a primitive setting at the government station in the Kandep Valley.

I decided to make reproductions of some of my two dimensional work to be sold. Café Press has reproductions of some of my 2D work on cups, clocks, tiles, journals, pillows, mouse pads, cloth bags, teddy bears, messenger bags and other assorted items.

It occurred to me that my 2D work should have an environment of three dimensional work which doesn’t lend itself to reproduction but would show the range of work that I have done.

Some of these items are land sculptures commissioned by the Australian Territorial Government for decorations on their stations in the Territory of Papua New Guinea.

The first three sculptures were commissioned by the Patrol Officer, Ross Allen of the Kandep Valley, Central Highlands of New Guinea. These were called SWAMP FLOWER, TIME PIECE, and a GIANT BIRD.
